Recently, Dean has undertaken quite a number of requests for new brass work of varying type. Once such project was a colaboration with pop star, Mark Read, formely of the group A1, and this was in connection with the Culham Institute who are an organisation who specialise in religious higher education. We will remember them is a powerful song written by Mark which is to be used for a documentary hosted by Sir David Frost on the Viatnam war. Dean's role was to arrange the song so that a brass ensemble could be used in a recent concert involving Ascot Brass for the Culham Institute and it is hoped that the same arrangement will be used on the documentary.
A new and very exciting commission was recently received from Hathern Band, who, having been sponsored by their local Arts council, have asked for a rousing concert finisher. The now completed work has been called, Solum Valeo, which is Latin for 'Strong foundation'. With Hathern being set on volcanic ground and also the church being a focal point of the community, this title seemed apt. There are strong motifs that feature throughout the piece and the middle features solos from the Vibraphone and Flugel Horn. The work lasts just over 5 minutes and features the church melody St Theodulph which is coupled with fitting words from The Salvation Army songbook. It is hoped that the band enjoy the piece and it fits their requirements. The piece is soon to be published along with an arrangement of the inspiring song, 'Jesus will still be there' by the Dutch publishers, Lake Music Publications. These 2 titles will be released in the first quarter of 2009, as will 3 new and contrasting pieces from the UK based publisher Prima Vista Musikk.
September proved a very busy month, and 4 new pieces were completed. Adir Hu is a traditional Hewbrew hymn, and was commissioned as a band arrangement by Musikverlag Frank. The same publishers also commissioned three further works; Groove On!, an up-beat party piece, and similarly, Swingalong! which is an easy-listening, fun piece for players and audiences alike; and finally, a stately piece entitled Regal Honour which will hopefully prove a fitting concert opener for many bands to present.
Earlier in the summer, a request from Bandmaster David Mallett from the South California Youth Band was received. The request was for a Euphonium solo, for the band's Solo Euphonium player, Derek Flinn. The solo contains 2 of Derek's favourite melodies, Heaven came down and Rachie and as a contrasting section, the tune of Lord, how I love you was also used. The solo is called Journey to faith.
Another USA connected piece, is Mighty God! which was written for the RSA Band at the Texas Music Conservatory. Divisional Music Director Philip Burn kidly invited Dean and Emma to be special guests for a week of the conservatory, and asked for a piece to be especially written. The piece starts as a chorale of Holy, holy holy but quickly fuses into a new style and encorporates the ever-popular worship song What a mighty God we serve!.
The Wondrous Cross was written in February 2008 for Staines SA band to assist with their Easter ministry. The pieces uses two familiar melodies that fit the the words 'When I survey...'. Starting off as a choral type setting, the piece evolves into an exciting Bolero and a big finish.
Another recent work was commissioned by www.heavybrass.com who required a piece to market in connection with this year's Olympic Games. Olympia features 4 distint sections 'Parade', 'The Games', 'Competition' and 'Victory' and uses a variety of styles and moods.
A project that was of great significance was to provide music for Adam Jefferson - who along with his wife were the photographers at Dean and Emma's wedding last July. Adam uses DVD catalogues to promote his work, and so the requirement was for some mellow music to have in the background as images of recent weddings are shown. Dean and Emma were thrilled with Adam and Jan's work and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone getting married soon- their website is AJPhotographic.co.uk
